 TRAINING ACTIVITIES

In order to identify the existing knowledge and knowledge gaps, experiences, training needs and aspirations of the energy agencies, energy efficiency advice centres and local authority energy professionals in the field of sustainable energy use in transport, the partners have developed their own research instruments (questionnaire surveys and personal interviews).

Questionnaire in PDF format: en, fr, nl, it.
Questionnaire in EXCEL format: en, fr, nl, it.

Building on the collected information from the preparation phase, the partners conducted an in-depth analysis.

Furthermore the partners examined the competencies and skills necessary to work in the field of sustainable energy use in transport.

Energy agencies and networks of energy agencies were intensively involved in this first phase as they are the most important key actors.

The partners then set up the necessary educational strategies and developed the training material.

On the basis of the exchange of information with the target groups, four training themes were selected:
- Mobility Management (860 ko), examples on mobility management (1 Mo),
- Awareness raising activities & communication Campaigns (960 ko),
- Alternative fuels & vehicles (1 Mo),
- Demand Management (1,2 Mo),
each containing several topics (see table below).

Overview, description and evaluation of the training activities carried out within the e-Atomium project.

Themes and topics addressed by the e-Atomium training:

ThemesTopics
Mobility Management - School Travel Plans
- Company & Administration Travel Plans
- (Tourism Travel Plans)
Awareness raising activities and communication Campaigns - Target group dedicated communication: arguments and recommendations for considering the needs of specific target groups in local transport policies
- Eco-driving
- Topic related communication (e.g. marketing PT, soft modes)
- Organisation of an awareness raising event (e.g. mobility week)
Alternative fuels & vehicles - Biofuels (incl. pure vegetal oils)
- Comparative analysis of all alternative fuels & vehicles
- Environment appraisal of community/municipal vehicle fleets
Demand Management - Urban planning & transport: the “compact city”; parking management; new neighbourhoods/car free housing
- Access management and vehicle restrictions
- Road pricing & Congestion charge schemes

These themes and topics form the common European training programme that was implemented in 6 countries (Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom).

The first training sessions were organised between March and June 2006 and the last one in March 2007.

The training modules were very practical and focused on the exchange of experiences and innovation. Indeed, each module included case studies, down to the earth and interactive exercises (learning by doing) and business cases were also prepared for energy agencies wishing to make sustainable energy use in transport a part of their core activity.

Most privileged forms for training were:
- Case studies (good practice adapted to the EA’s context)
- Workshops (small groups)
- Training manuals (very practical)
- CD ROMS (demo)
- Discussions & exchanges on successful experiences

Each participant was given one or more training manuals for each of the themes & topics, provided by the e-Atomium partners and trainers. Relevant manuals were made available from other STEER training projects including Treatise and Competence. Other dissemination materials is now available online (see "Library" section).

For further information on the training sessions carried out, please contact the e-Atomium partner in your country.
